The 5th edition of the European Development Days (EDD) took place in Brussels on 6 and 7 December 2010. Organised by the European Commission and the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, EDD is the leading European forum where the questions and issues about international development cooperation are debated.
On the first day of the EDD, Kristalina Georgieva, Member of the EC in charge of International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, introduced a special address by Salam Fayyad, Prime Minister and Minister for Finance of the Palestinian Authority.
Philippe, Prince of Belgium, visited the Development Village with Charles Michel, Belgian Minister for Development Cooperation and President in office of the Council of the EU, and Fokion Fotiadis, Director-General of the Development DG of the European Commission.

the Palestinian Authority's reform efforts have contributed to improve private sector confidence and economic growth;
the World Bank stated in September 2010 that the quality of the Palestinian Authority's performance positions it well for the establishment of a State at any point in the near future.

||SOUNDBITE by Salam Fayyad (in ENGLISH): over the past three years, the EU has extended to Palestine an assistance amount of 1.3 billion euro; a large part of the progress that Palestine has been able to make over the past three years was made possible by the assistance provided by the EU;
what this enterprise is about is enabling Palestinians to be able to live like all other peoples around the world, as free people in a country of our own, with dignity.

||Salam Fayyad with Kristalina Georgieva; and SOUNDBITE by Salam Fayyad (in ENGLISH): the EU's declaration of December 2010 is quite clear on a number of issues: the principle of the 1967 borders, the definition of the occupied Palestinian territory to include east Jerusalem, the applicability of the 1967 borders to Jerusalem, etc; there is a number of important issues in addition to a strong statement of support by the EU of the Palestinian Authority's programme; if you take all those elements together and build on them by trying to find international consensus as a basis for moving forward, that would be an enormous contribution.
