||General view of the meeting
||Soundbite by Androulla Vassiliou (in ENGLISH): President Barroso, mentioned earlier this afternoon that the European Capitals of Culture are the cultural Olympics of the European Union; this is probably why Greece, and especially Athens, has played such an important role in the development of this initiative; Greece was of course at the origin of the European Capitals of Culture; earlier today we heard about the fascinating story of the birth of the Capitals; without the vision of Melina Mercouri and without her enthusiasm, matched by that of Jacques Lang, none of this would have been possible.
||Soundbite by Spyros Mercouri (in ENGLISH): in 1983 the Minister for Culture, Melina Mercouri, proposed to the European Community to designate each year a European city as a Cultural Capital of Europe; Melina wanted to give a cultural dimension to the Community.
