On 15 March 2010, the Ministers for Finance of the 16 countries of the Eurogroup, met in Brussels for their monthly talks on the economic situation of the euro area.
Among other issues, they discussed the timetable for the withdrawal of stimulus measures, implemented in the past two years, to soften the impact of the economic and financial crisis.
They also assessed the measures announced by Greece for meeting the criteria of the Stability and Growth Pact.
Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourgish Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, and President of the Eurogroup, arriving at the meeting, told journalists that euro area countries will discuss ways to help Greece overcome its debt problems, although the country probably won't need financial help.
And he held a joint press conference after the Eurogroup meeting with Olli Rehn, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs.

||SOUNDBITE (in FRENCH) by Jean-Claude Juncker, Luxembourgish Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, and President of the Eurogroup, saying that the Eurogroup, the Central Bank, and the Commission fully support the steps taken by the Greek government, which concerns a package of courageous and ambitious measures. They would like to confirm the commitment entered into by the European Council. The Member States of the euro area will take determined and coordinated action, if such action turns out to be necessary.
||SOUNDBITE (in ENGLISH) by Olli Rehn, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs: We discussed Europe 2020 and its both dimensions. The mobilization of the growth drivers to enhance productivity and its value added in the European economy on the one hand, and the necessity of fiscal consolidation on the other hand.
||SOUNDBITE (in ENGLISH) by Olli Rehn: I welcome the decision to which Jean-Claude Juncker referred to have a more systematic and thorough surveillance of the euro area in this regard. This is also related to the forthcoming proposal of the Commission, which is also in the work programme of the President of the Eurogroup, to reinforce economic policy coordination in the euro area. We will present this proposal before the informal Eurogroup Ecofin in Madrid, that is before mid April. So that in Madrid, we can have a substantive and thorough discussion on this very important subject.
