End production: 01/12/2009 First transmission: 01/12/2009
On 1 December 2009, Herman Van Rompuy, Belgian Prime Minister and President designate of the European Council visited Borut Pahor, Slovenian Prime Minister. Herman Van Rompuy, elected last month to the head of the EU, visited Slovenia on the day the bloc's new reform treaty comes into force. The short trip to this tiny alpine country, which gained independence in 1992 and joined the EU in 2004, was the second foreign stop of Herman Van Rompuy since his election. Later, Herman Van Rompuy will fly to Lisbon, in Portugal, where he is to attend a ceremony marking the coming into force of the Lisbon treaty, which defines the EU new policies and make the bloc a more powerful global player.
