End production: 22/07/2009
At a press conference on 22/07/2009 in Brussels, Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Health, said she hoped that the EU Member States agree on a common strategy of vaccination against the influenza A(H1N1) virus, once vaccine is on the European market. She said that when the vaccine is available, we will have to put some scheme in place of how, and where we are going to vaccinate the people. Asked about possible pandemic in September 2009, she said that EU citizens should feel secure. They should remain calm but vigilant, she added, before acknowledging that nobody knows how this virus will evolve in the near future.

10:06:29 SOUNDBITE (in ENGLISH) by Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Health: My message to the EU citizens is that they should feel secure. They should be informed and become aware of the needs and the actions that they should take, but they should remain calm. But at the same time, they should remain vigilant because nobody knows how this virus will evolve in the near future. 00:00:30

10:07:07 SOUNDBITE (in ENGLISH) by Androulla Vassiliou on the EU Health Council in October 2009: One of the issues that we will be discussing, is indeed, when the vaccine becomes available, how these limited doses of vaccine in the beginning will be made available to our citizens. There has been no decision on this, because we did not have the vaccine, and we did not want to discuss it in abstract. But I am sure that by October 2009, we shall have more information, and that is when we expect to have a decision on that. 00:00:32

10:07:47 SOUNDBITE (in ENGLISH) by Androulla Vassiliou: EU vaccination strategy is also very important. Because even when the vaccine is available, we have to put some scheme in place of how we are going to vaccinate the people, how many doctors and nurses we need, where the vaccination will take place. Will it take place in hospitals or in schools? All these issues are to be discussed, and hopefully, we will agree on a common strategy of the vaccination. 00:00:31

10:08:22 SOUNDBITE (in ENGLISH) by Androulla Vassiliou on treatment: We have two available antiviral drugs which are on the market. We will continue to use them. But let me point once again that these antiviral drugs are not something that one should take liberally, but under the strict advice of doctor and upon prescription. Because we run the risk of creating resistance to these antivirals, as we had three or four cases of resistance. We have to take these antivirals upon advice. 00:00:41

10:09:09 SOUNDBITE (in ENGLISH) by Androulla Vassiliou on purchase of vaccine: We have suggested that the Commission may help Member States who have no pre-purchase agreements, to have a joint procurement of this agreement. I did not suggest that we should wait until October 2009 to do that. We are putting in, place now a joint procurement proposal, which we shall be inviting Health Ministers of these Member States, if they would like - this is, I stress, on a voluntary basis -, to join in this joint effort, to have a joint procurement of the vaccine. 00:00:44
