Visiting the European Commission in Brussels on 5 March 2009, Nika Gilauri, Georgian Prime Minister, met with Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Energy.
They discussed the supply of energy and diversification of energy sources to Europe. Particularly, they talked about the recent developments related to the Nabucco gas pipeline whose legal framework is now in the final stages. Government officials from Austria, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Georgia, Iraq, Romania, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and the United States, as well as representatives of the European Commission, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development are part of the project. Nabucco is a 3,300 km gas pipeline which would deliver natural gas from the Caspian Basin and Central Asia via Georgia and Turkey to Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Austria, circumventing Russia - central to the EU’s energy diversification strategy.
