|| SOUNDBITE by Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the EC in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, (in ENGLISH): this is really the first help for the Palestinian people; it is about early recovery and humanitarian aid; for that, the European Commission, that has never let the Palestinians down, will not only be a co-sponsor but also donate 436 million euro; but this is only one important thing; the other is that the crossings be open, not only for humanitarian aid, but also for economic and commercial goods to come through; because only then, people can have a chance.
|| SOUNDBITE by Benita Ferrero-Waldner (in ENGLISH): we have a special financial mechanism, the so-called PEGASE mechanism; this is efficient, quick, and we already have used it in the last year in order to bring funds directly to Gaza; we work together with the Palestinian Authority, with Salam Fayyad, Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, but we then channel it directly and we control and monitor it also; so this is a channel that we will use but I also offer it to all the other donors that might need a channel to directly be able to work with the Palestinians in Gaza.
