Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the EU and High Representative for CFSP, made a trip to the Middle East from 24 to 28 February 2009, to prepare the international conference in support of the Palestinian economy and the reconstruction of Gaza, to be held in Sharm el-Sheikh on 2 March 2009. He visited Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Israel and the Palestinian Territories.
On 26 February, he was in Cairo, Egypt, where he met with Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Egyptian Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Marc Otte, EU Special Representative for the Middle East peace process.

||Statement by Javier Solana after the meeting (in ENGLISH) saying that they had a very good meeting as always; they are good friends and have been working together for a long time; saying that they have a very good opportunity with the meeting that will take place in Sharm el-Sheikh on 2 March 2009, an important moment to generate momentum economically for the reconstruction of Gaza; it is also the first time that a meeting of that nature takes place, after important events in Gaza and in the rest of the world; it will be a moment also to make a clear political statement; saying that he hopes that it will be a success; saying that the EU is supporting wholeheartedly the efforts of Egypt in establishing an inter-Palestinian dialogue; they hope very much it will come to fruition.
