Ferenc Gyurcsány, Hungarian Prime Minister, was in Brussels on 24 February 2009 for talks with José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, on the global financial and economic crisis. They discussed the measures taken by Hungary to cope with the economic downturn as well as its strategies aimed at spurring economic growth.
The European Union has so far provided two of its Member States, Hungary and Latvia, with direct financial support in order to counteract the effects of the global financial and economic crisis. Concern has increased in Europe over the volatility of Central and Eastern European currencies, several of which have fallen sharply amid fears of capital flight. Ferenc Gyurcsány has called for a massive EU aid plan for crisis-hit banks in Central and Eastern Europe.
