The Education, Youth and Culture Council (EYC Council) met in Brussels on 20 and 21 November 2008.
The session on culture was presided over by Christine Albanel, French Minister for Culture and Communication and President in office of the Council.
The 27 Ministers discussed the draft conclusions on the European heritage label, the promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue in the external relations of the European Union and its Member States, and architecture's contribution to sustainable development. Martine de Boisdeffre, Director of the Archives of France, spoke about archive theft. Leonard Orban, Member of the EC in charge of Multilingualism, gave a presentation on multilingualism. Christine Albanel presented the results of the conference on multilingualism held in Paris on 26 September 2008. The EYC Council continued with a session on audiovisual matters, with the adoption of the draft conclusions on the European digital library and creative content online, along with the adoption of the safer Internet programme. The Ministers were also due to exchange views on the internet and culture.
After the Council, the ceremony to launch the European digital library 'Europeana' took place at the Royal Library of Belgium.
