End production: 10/11/2008 First transmission: 10/11/2008
EU Ministers for Defence met on 10 November 2008 in Brussels to discuss military capabilities and the European Defence Agency (EDA).
They launched several specific initiatives including the overhauling of European helicopters and the training of pilots to be deployed to the most challenging theatres of operations, the creation of a European air transport fleet, construction of a European air and sea group, marine demining projects, etc. They also addressed the issue of restructuring European security and defence industries and they heard a report from the EDA Chief Executive on the Agency's activities.
In relation to military operations, Ministers prepared for launching the EU military naval operation to fight against piracy off the coast of Somalia that will be commanded by the United Kingdom. They also took stock of EU-led military operations such as the success of the EUFOR operations in Chad and the Central African Republic, and that of the 'Althea' military mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina which paves the way for its replacement by a military education and training mission.
Ministers also analysed an initiative for exchanges between young officers inspired by the ERASMUS programme. They adopted a declaration launching this initiative, which aims to further convergence between training schemes and strengthening contacts between military schools within the European Union, which the 27 Ministers for Defence have unanimously agreed upon in Deauville.
Lastly, the Ministers launched several projects to reinforce the means for military spatial observation.
