Michel Barnier, French Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, and Joe Borg, Member of the EC in charge of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, gave a press conference on the results of the Council meeting.
The European Ministers in charge of Fisheries meeting in Luxembourg have reached an agreement on the fishing possibilities and conditions in the Black Sea and Baltic Seas for 2009.
They have also adopted a European common position in view of the upcoming annual meeting of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) to ask for a reduction on the quotas and for a stricter control system at all levels.

||General view of the press conference room
||Michel Barnier, French Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries and President in office of the Council, (in FRENCH) on Atlantic tuna; saying that the way favoured by the European Ministers is not the way of a moratoria but the way of reduction and better administration; the idea is that all the controls that are respected by the European fishermen must be respected by all the fishermen, not only the European ones; saying that they are going to be vigilant and even more: intransigent.
||Joe Borg, Member of the EC in charge of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, (in ENGLISH) saying that everybody realises that a lot is at stake; the time is running out to save bluefin tuna stocks from collapse; saying that with this position the European Union will be able to champion decisive measures in particular to resolve the issue of overcapacity, to reduce the length of the fishing seasons, and to identify specific measures that can be introduced to control the market chain.
||Joe Borg (in ENGLISH) on Baltic Seas; saying that they have got an agreement on the Baltic TACS and quotas which further builds on the recovery plan that was adopted in June 2007; in particular, the Council agreed on a reduction of 39% in the TAC for Western haring, coupled to a commitment to establish a long term management plan for pelagic stocks in the Baltic; for the Baltic cod stocks they have agreed to a reduction of 15% in the TAC for the Western stock and then an increase of 15% on the Eastern stock; the Council also endorsed the Commission's proposal to reduce effort in the Eastern Baltic by 10%.
||Michel Barnier (in FRENCH) on Black Sea; saying that an agreement was reached between Romania and Bulgaria on turbot, but they have decided to discuss with the other countries of the Black Sea.
