The Donor's Conference pledged more than 4.5 billion US dollars to help Georgia recover after the August conflict with Russia. On a press conference, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the EC in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, said that it was "much more than we have thought" and therefore "it is a day of joy". She added that this sent a very strong message to the Georgian population that "we are also ready to provide not only strong political but also financial and practical support". Lado Gurgenidze, Georgian Prime Minister, explained that every single euro will make Georgia "stronger, more prosperous, more democratic" and "will alleviate a significant degree of human suffering". This conference was organised by the EC and the World Bank, and called for pledges to mobilise external assistance to support the country in the reconstruction of damaged infrastructures, reintegration of internally displaced people and in accelerating Georgia's economy recovery. The EC announced an assistance package of up to 500 million euros over three years, depending on the pace of recovery and the evolution of the Georgian economy.
