Healthy living and a balanced diet were the themes of the day on 17 October 2008 at the Elementary School of Limassol Panagia Triherousa, in Cyprus. Pupils hosted a visit by Mariann Fischer Boel, Member of the EC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, who came to the school to launch the informational campaign on the newly expanded European School Milk Programme. Under the slogan "Milk - Drink it up!", the information campaign aims to raise awareness about the benefits of milk consumption and the availability of EU funds to schools. Mariann Fischer Boel was joined by Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Health, to kick off a series of entertaining and educative events and to talk with the pupils about the importance of a healthy, balanced diet that includes milk, milk products, fruits and vegetables. The visit also marked the opening of a Europe-wide photo competition where pupils are invited to submit pictures of how they and their friends enjoy dairy products and a healthy lifestyle. As 22 million children are considered overweight or obese and that number is expected to grow by 400,000 per year in the future, the EU has made it a priority to support good eating and nutritional habits. In this context, the EU School Milk Programme encourages children to consume dairy products as part of a balanced diet and to develop healthy eating habits. The School Milk Programme provides subsidies to schools and other educational establishments so that they can provide their students with selected dairy products. On 11 July 2008, responding to requests from the EP and the Council, the Commission expanded the School Milk Programme to increase the range of products it covers. In addition, whereas before it was not obligatory for Member States to include secondary schools in the programme, the new rules automatically give these schools equal access to apply for the subsidy.
