Visit of Andris Piebalgs and Louis Michel to Nigeria (2nd part)

Louis Michel, Member of the EC in charge of Development and Humanitarian Aid, and Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, made an official visit to Nigeria from 9 to 11 September 2008. They held talks with government authorities and others on various issues of common interest, concentrating on the Africa/EU energy partnership.
On 10 September 2008, both Louis Michel and Andris Piebalgs met with Ojo Maduekwe, Nigerian Minister for Foreign Affairs. Louis Michel went on to meet Dimeji Bankole, Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, and David Mark, President of the Nigerian Senate.
On 11 September 2008, Andris Piebalgs attended the opening day of the West African Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) conference. Louis Michel met with Mohammed Sanusi Daggash, Deputy Chairman of the Nigerian National Planning Commission, and attended the signing of three European Development Fund Projects which represent a significant effort in the areas of Niger Delta, non State actors and good governance at State level. Louis Michel also gave a short press conference.

||Louis Michel (in FRENCH) saying that they had a meeting with the Nigerian Minister for Foreign Affairs at the highest level, and they agreed it was important to relaunch the political dialogue and raise the level of that political dialogue; they also agreed that, for example, in the field of energy, it was important to establish a true partnership between the European Commission and Nigeria; they also discussed security issues in the Niger Delta; they also talked about the theft of petroleum which is organized by gangs and is depriving Nigeria of a portion of its oil resources; they have seen how the EC could possibly collaborate to help fight against these gangs

||Andris Piebalgs (in ENGLISH) saying that the day's meetings clearly confirmed his views that energy cooperation between the European Union and Nigeria is one of the issues that is very close to the hearts minds of the Nigerian government; it is definitely a lot of interest for cooperation; so, that, he believes, is the main message in this respect; he was also very pleased that the Nigerian government takes very seriously the situation in the Niger Delta; so these are the two main messages: cooperation, yes there will be cooperation on energy fields in all areas; and second it is clear that the Niger Delta will be taken care of
