Louis Michel, Member of the EC in charge of Development and Humanitarian Aid, and Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Energy, made an official visit to Nigeria from 9 to 11 September 2008. They held talks with government authorities and others on various issues of common interest, concentrating on the Africa/EU energy partnership. On 10 September 2008, both Louis Michel and Andris Piebalgs met with Ojo Maduekwe, Nigerian Minister for Foreign Affairs. Louis Michel went on to meet Dimeji Bankole, Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, and David Mark, President of the Nigerian Senate. On 11 September 2008, Andris Piebalgs attended the opening day of the West African Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (EITI) conference. Louis Michel met with Mohammed Sanusi Daggash, Deputy Chairman of the Nigerian National Planning Commission, and attended the signing of three European Development Fund Projects which represent a significant effort in the areas of Niger Delta, non State actors and good governance at State level. Louis Michel also gave a short press conference.
