José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, said on 3 September 2008 that Serbia could be granted the status of EU candidate member in 2009, but he added that this was not a commitment and that it depended on Serbia and on the political conditions on the European Union side. José Manuel Barroso said also that Europe should acknowledge the effort made by the Serbian government with the arrest of Radovan Karadzic by implementing the trade part of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, but he asked Belgrade to show full cooperation with the ICTY.
