As African leaders, including Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe, arrived on 30 June 2008 in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, the European Commission's delegation in Harare, said that Robert Mugabe definitively did not have the mandate to govern the country. In a video link with the capital of Zimbabwe, Xavier Marchal, Head of the European Commission's Delegation in Zimbabwe, told journalists in Brussels that nevertheless there had been indications that the party in power and the opposition side would be ready to enter into negotiations for a transition. Asked whether the Commission should leave the country in a protest for the results of the presidential poll, Xavier Marchal said that the Commission's intention was to remain active, supportive to the population as it has been in the past, even more now during this difficult time.
