End production: 19/05/2008 First transmission: 19/05/2008
EU Ministers for Agriculture met on 19 May 2008 in Brussels to take a decision on a proposal for a Directive estalishing a framework to achieve the sustainable use of pesticides, that includes an important reduction in the number of substances allowed in the EU. Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the EC in charge of Health, said at her arrival that she was not ready to make compromises on health issues. The Ministers also held an emergency debate on the rise in food and agriculture product prices with a view to find a solution to mitigate the adverse effects of such market price trends. It was expected that the Ministers would ask to include measures aimed at curbing the trend on the agricultural "health check".
