End production: 13/05/2008 First transmission: 13/05/2008
The EU Ministers for Development gathered on 13 May 2008 in Brussels for an extraordinary General Affairs and External Relations Council to discuss the humanitarian situation in Myanmar after the devastation caused by the cyclone Nargis and to assess the state of play of the humanitarian situation on the ground, as well as to review the response of the EU (Member States and the European Commission). As proposed by the Commission, the EU Ministers also tried to identify and co-ordinate the best means of facilitating the mobilisation and delivery of international humanitarian assistance on the ground. Entering the Council building, Andrej Šter, Slovenian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and President in office of the Council, told journalists that the EU would be once again calling the authorities of Myanmar to let the humanitarian help and personnel enter the country. He added that approximately one third of collected means up to now had been donated by the Member States of the EU.
