Ministers for Economy and Finance from the Euro area met on 13 May 2008 in Brussels to prepare the following day's Economic and Financial Affairs Council. The meeting focused on the policies and procedures to be followed in improving financial supervision and financial stability. Ministers also took stock of initiatives to better combat VAT fraud, and the Commission provided an informal report on implementation of the directive on saving taxation. However, inflation and the financial turmoil continued to preside the meeting. At his arrival to the Council, Joaquín Almunia, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, said that the Commission was considering to open an internal market enquiry to see how the retail sector is working in relation with the rise of prices. Moreover, the Ministers were expected to anayse the state of the Eurozone after 10 years and to discuss the future of the single currency club, which currently has 15 members.
