Vladimír Špidla, Member of the EC in charge of Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, participated in a conference organised on 15 May 2008 at the European Parliament about the "Role and Challenges of the Social Economy in the EU". For him, the social economy is one of the main pillars of the Lisbon Strategy.

||Vladimír Špidla (in FRENCH) saying that nowadays, social economy takes part in the objectives of the Lisbon Strategy; the integrated guidelines recognize in particular the role of social economy regarding the insertion of underprivileged people in the labour market; more precisely, the organisms of this sector contribute to the Lisbon objectives in several different manners: creating quality employment, as it is the case for 11 million people in Europe; reinforcing social cohesion, by a better integration of persons or underprivileged territories and by the application of original forms of solidarity; redistribution and intervention mainly where social demand is not covered
