During his two day visit to Myanmar, Louis Michel, Member of the EC in charge of Development and Humanitarian Aid, urged the authorities to open up to the humanitarian aid workers and to allow ways to allow both the workers and the aid into the country. He added that this should happen as soon as possible. After meeting three Ministers, he appealed for the government to change their minds before more deaths occurred. Meanwhile in central Yangon, a massive clean up was ongoing as troops and workers cleared the debris.

10:00:31 Louis Michel (in ENGLISH) saying that no country in the world can cope with such a disaster alone; when you have such a catastrophe, you need help from outside; because it is a question of emergency; time is life and if the authorities of Myanmar do not realise that, they will be considered responsible; there is still time, they can still save people, rehabilitate land, help the people prepare the land for the next harvest; saying that he asked for visas for the EU humanitarian staff; they have accepted to extend the visas; he also heard, and that is a positive move, that they were ready to allow permissions and visas for people coming with particular individual programmes and planning; so there is a move, but now he urged them to go faster because the EU needs their response; saying that he thinks they will get results; and in any case, it was his duty to be there, he could not wait any more, because there was a strong demand to open the way to go on the ground and help the people (3 shots) 00:01:37
