José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, congratulated Silvio Berlusconi for his electoral victory, saying he looked forward to a fruitful and constructive relationship with the new Italian government. Quoted by his spokesperson Johannes Laitenberger, the President of the European Commission said the change of government in Italy was taking place at an important time for the EU and expressed confidence that Berlusconi would contribute to the success of Europe's political project. He also praised outgoing Prime Minister Romano Prodi for the close relations between his government and the European Commission, and for his commitment to the European project.
