Type: Visit to the Commission
End production: 10/04/2008 First transmission: 10/04/2008
Peter Herzig, Director of IFM-GEOMAR (Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of Kiel), Jean-Yves Perrot, CEO of Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea), and Ed Hill, director of NOCS (National Oceanography Centre, Southampton), representing European marine research institutes, met with Joe Borg, Member of the EC in charge of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, to discuss future strategy for a European Maritime Research Policy and perspectives of enhanced European cooperation in maritime research. In autumn 2007, the European Commission adopted a Blue Paper on an integrated EU maritime policy for developing a thriving maritime economy and the full use of the seas potential in an environmentally sustainable manner. The Commission wants to create the framework conditions for the maritime and marine industries to remain global leaders and to contribute not only to the objectives of the Lisbon agenda, but also to a truly integrated European Research Area, to help meet the challenges relating to safety of navigation, marine pollution, law enforcement, and overall security.
