Giorgi Baramidze, Georgian Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, was in Brussels on 18 April 2008 for urgent talks with EU and NATO officials before travelling to London and Paris. He met with Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the EC in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy. Talks with the Commissioner were part of diplomatic efforts to mobilize European support in response to a Russian move to establish legal links with breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Georgia wants to prevent the annexation of its territories by Russia and to prevent conflict in the region.
