Visit of Louis Michel in Cuba: meeting with Felipe Pérez Roque, Cuban Minister for Foreign Affairs

Louis Michel, Member of the EC in charge of Development and Humanitarian Aid, went on a three-day visit to Cuba in March 2008. The objective of this mission by Louis Michel was to try and advance the political dialogue process with the Cuban authorities. The European Commission stands ready to work with the Cuban Government, in coordination with the European Union partners, to improve and deepen cooperation issues of common interest such as the environment and climate change. These issues were discussed during the visit, as well as President Raul Castro's intentions to undertake a re-structuring of the State administration and a number of economic reforms. Louis Michel welcomed the signing of International Covenants on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights and on Civil and Political Rights, by the Cuban government.
