Ministerial Conference on the challenges of the EU External Border Management: arrivals
End production: 12/03/2008 First transmission: 12/03/2008
Ministers gathered at the Brdo pri Kranju congress centre, in Slovenia, for a European Union Ministerial Conference on external borders. The meeting was hosted by Dragutin Mate, Slovenian Minister for the Interior and President in office of the Council. The aim of this conference was to launch a debate on how to improve EU border management in order to prevent undesired access to the Union while at the same time ensuring openness and accessibility. Measures proposed by the European Commission included fingerprinting and the collecting of personal data. A set of three Communications which the Commission issued in February 2008 provided the basis for the Ministerial Conference's examination of the subject of the management of the external borders of the European Union. The first Communication concerned the evaluation of Frontex (the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union). The second Communication was on a possible entry-exit system and registered travellers program. Finally, the Ministerial Meeting discussed the European external borders surveillance system - EUROSUR. Ministers from Iceland, Norway and Switzerland took part in the meeting. Iceland and Norway are also members of the Schengen passport-free area, which Switzerland is expected to join in 2008.
