The Finance Ministers of the Eurogroup met on 3 March 2008 in Brussels for their monthly discussion on the economic situation of the Euro area. Ministers were expected to debate the Euro strength, the impact of energy prices and inflation expectations. Joaquín Almunia, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, presented the European Commission's interim economic forecasts which were published on 21 February. The Euro area economy is expected to remain fairly resilient in the face of the numerous and sizeable headwinds (US slowdown, financial market turbulence, high commodity prices), with GDP growth forecast to be 1.8% in 2008. The projection for HICP inflation, on the other hand, was revised up to 2.6% for 2008. The Eurogroup also heard about the Commission's assessment of the eight Stability Programmes on the agenda of the Ecofin meeting the next day. The eight updated programmes concern Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Ireland, Malta, Slovenia, Spain and Portugal.
