Following the Economic and Financial Affairs Council, Andrej Bajuk, Slovenian Minister for Finance and President in office of the Council, Joaquín Almunia, Member of the EC in charge of Economic and Monetary Affairs, and Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Administrative Affairs, Audit and Anti-Fraud, gave a joint press conference.
The European Finance Ministers backed the European Commission's recent call for France to cut its deficit and reform public spending faster, alongside budgetary programmes for five other EU Member States. Joaquin Almunia called Member States not to waste their efforts in achieving fiscal consolidation. No matter how serious the economic downturn may be, we need to remind the experience of past episodes of slowdown, and not to breach again the limit of our deficits, he said.
