Weekly meeting of the Barroso Commission: round table

Type: Report   Reference: I-056174   Duration: 10:53:23  Lieu:
End production: 23/01/2008   First transmission: 23/01/2008
The main event at the 23 January weekly European Commission meeting was the adoption of a major package of legislative proposals to combat climate change and improve the EU's energy security and competitiveness. The Commission will present detailed plans on how Member States will contribute to the EU's overall target of cutting the bloc's carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2020. The plans will also detail how capitals should reach the EU's target on renewable energy. EU leaders agreed in 2007 that renewables should account for 20% of energy by the end of the next decade. Other topics for discussion and decision were the annual assessment of the stability programmes for Germany, Luxembourg, Finland and the Netherlands, and of the convergence programmes for Sweden, Hungary and the United Kingdom; and the annual report on gender equality which will identify the main developments of the relative situation of women and men in a series of policy fields and present the main challenges for the further promotion of equality between women and men. It should be noted that the first meeting ever of the European Commission took place 50 years before, on 15 January 1958. A Photo showing this historic event and the current college of Commissioners was exposed in the Commission's meeting room.
