Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the EC in charge of Administrative Affairs, Audit and Anti-fraud, witnessed the signature between the European Commission and Japan Tobacco International (JTI) of a 15-year agreement to fight against cigarette smuggling and counterfeiting. Through the agreement, JTI will work with the European Commission, its anti-fraud office OLAF, and law enforcement authorities of the Member States to help in the fight against contraband, including the problem of counterfeit cigarettes. Signatories were Franz-Hermann Brüner, Director General of OLAF; Michel Petite, Director General of the Legal Service of the EC; and Pierre de Labouchere, President and CEO of JTI.
