The Indian capital hosted the 8th EU/India Summit on 30 November 2007. Following talks between the trade representatives for the European Union and India, José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, and José Sócrates, Portuguese Prime Minister and President in office of the Council of the EU, met with Manmohan Singh, Indian Prime Minister, for further talks on relations between the two parties. The Summit tackled a wide range of issues from trade and commerce to climate change. Following the meeting, José Manuel Barroso told reporters that trade and investment would be beneficial for both the EU and India. Manmohan Singh added he was hopeful that an agreement on trade would be reached before the next Summit. Earlier in the day, José Manuel Barroso had laid a wreath at Rajghat, a black marble plaque marking the spot where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated in 1948 at the age of 78.
