Horst Seehofer, German Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, was in Brussels for a meeting with Mariann Fischer Boel, Member of the EC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development, on key agricultural issues. High on the agenda, they discussed in particular the Commission's proposal for an in depth reform of the EU wine market. Germany, like some other Member States, is to battle with the Commission over the designation of Apfelwein, an alcoholic apple beverage from the south-western state of Hesse. In its proposal, the Commission uses the definition of wine only for products made from grape, and not from other fruits or berries.
