The 9th Euromed conference took place in Lisbon on 5 and 6 November 2007, gathering the European Ministers for Foreign Affairs, theirs Mediterranean homologues (Algeria, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey). Javier Solana, Secretary General of the Council of the EU and High Representative for CFSP, and Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Member of the EC in charge of External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, were also present. During the second day of the meeting, the Ministers for Foreign Affairs further debated on issues like the free-exchange zone (objective 2010), the Middle-East peace process and closer cooperation in terrorism. The Commission stretched the importance to deepen practical measures in order to apply the Euro-Mediterranean Code of Conduct on Countering Terrorism. Details were expected about the controversial French proposal, the Mediterranean project, announced in October by Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic, in Morocco. In this regard, Benita Ferrero-Waldner stated clearly that added-value is welcome but any jeopardizing of existing European Policies won’t be supported.
