The European Commission expressed its concerns following the declaration of a state of emergency in Pakistan. The Commission reiterated the importance it attaches to the holding of free and fair elections on schedule, to the restoration of civilian rule and the full respect for human rights, including the independence of the judiciary and freedom of the media. About the possibility of sanctions, the Commission said it was a decision to be taken by the Member States and not by the Commission itself.
