Statement of José Manuel Barroso on the Turkey/Iraq relations

José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, made a statement on the relations between Turkey and Iraq. He said he has received guarantees from Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish Prime Minister, that Turkey will respect the territorial integrity of Iraq. The European Commission has also expressed its concerns about the deterioration of the situation and has asked all the involved parties to look for diplomatic channels and dialog.

||José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, (in FRENCH) saying that he spoke to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish Prime Minister, the previous day, and told him the EU's position and concerns regarding the deterioration of the security situation and the kurdish issue; Turkey is entitled to defend its citizens and he condemns the terrorism engaged by the PKK; so, he expressed the EU's concerns to Recep Tayyip Erdogan; the Prime Minister told him that Turkey has no intention to question Iraq's territorial integrity, and any military action will only be addressed to terrorists; he will keep him informed about developments; he recommended Turkey to use diplomatic channels and dialogue and said that the EU has a clear preference for this way; but this is a very difficult and dramatic issue and the EU will continue to recommend to the parties involved to make efforts to avoid the deterioration of the situation
