Visit of Jean-Michel Lemétayer, President of the Committee of Professional Agricultural Organisations in the European Union, to Mariann Fischer Boel
Type: Visit to the Commission
End production: 08/10/2007 First transmission: 08/10/2007
Jean-Michel Lemetayer, President of the Committee of Professional Agricultural Organisations in the European Union, met in Brussels with Mariann Fischer Boel, Member of the EC in charge of Agriculture and Rural Development. They talked about the European agricultural agenda, including the major simplification of the Common Agricultural Policy (as proposed by the European Commission), the reform of the wine sector and the tight situation on the cereals market and the record price levels. The cereals market is currently characterised by historically high prices. The 2007 cereals crop is estimated below 2006's level because of dry and unusually hot weather in April followed by adverse summer weather in western Member States and drought and heat-waves in the Southeast of Europe. This outlook is likely to lead to a further reduction in the EU of private cereal stocks by the end of the 2007/2008 marketing year. At global level, closing stocks in 2007/2008 are expected to fall to a historically low level, especially in the major exporting countries.
