José Vieira da Silva, Portuguese Minister for Labour and Social solidarity, opened in Brussels the 437th plenary session of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) by presenting the working programme of the EU Portuguese Presidency for the coming six months. He said that the main priority would be to find an agreement on a new treaty that would show strong commitment to the European project as a whole.

||José Vieira da Silva (in PORTUGUESE) on the main priority of the Portuguese Presidency, namely a new treaty: in July the IGC will be launched;
the Portuguese Presidency wants to conclude the technical and legal work quickly so that in October at the informal European summit they will be able to discuss and come to an agreement on the new reformed treaty;
it is a very important aim and a simplification for all the institutions of the EU;
a success would show willingness and commitment to this European project
