The best of European football was on show in Manchester on 13 March 2007 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signature of the Treaty of Rome setting up the modern-day European Union. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of their participation as the first English team to play UEFA’s European club competition, Manchester United will play a Europe XI coached by Marcello Lippi, Italian coach and World Cup winner. European integration and European football are two success stories that have gone hand in hand over the last 50 years, opening new horizons for millions of people. Football is the most popular sport in the world and the last World cup showed that Europe is the undisputed world leader in the game. This celebration match was an opportunity to enjoy and reflect on that achievement.
