Extraits de la conférence de presse de Karel van Miert, membre de la CE, sur l'affaire Holland Media Groep (HMG)
On 20 September 1995, Karel van Miert, Member of the EC in charge of Competition, gave a press conference, at the European Parliament, in Stasbourg; following the decision of the European Commission to prohibit the creation of the joint venture Holland Media Groep in its present form. As structured at that time, Holland Media Groep SA (HMG), the joint venture between RTL, Veronica and Endemol, which has been operational since 01/09/1995, has been refused approval by the Eu!ropean Commission. The latter considers that the transaction gives the partners a dominant position at one and the same time on the television broadcasting, advertising and programme production markets in the Netherlands. In the light of its investigation, the European Commission has reached the conclusion that HMG, with the support of its three commercial channels, will become the largest television broadcaster on the Dutch market; with a probable audience share of 40%, it will significantly reduce the audience share of the public sector broadcasters. As well as adopting a negative decision, the European Commission had begun negotiations with the parties concerned on alternative formulas which should result, within no more than three months, in competition being restored to the Dutch media market.
