Improving women’s lives in India

The European Investment Bank (EIB) invests in green energy projects that improves the lives of people while supporting climate action. In Uravakonda, a small town in the Anantapur district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, thanks to the wind farms installed in Andhra Pradesh, people now have access to 24 hours of uninterrupted electricity compared to 12 hours of unreliable electricity before. This makes a huge difference to the daily life of children, women and girls who can now circulate safely at night thanks to the street lighting, benefit from fans, light and computers in school classrooms and have fridge in their homes. In Bangalore, one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, the metro provides an affordable and climate-friendly solution for commuters. The European Investment Bank (EIB) financed the construction of a new 18-station rapid transit line and the purchase of 96 train cars for use on the line with a EUR 500 million loan, the largest ever in India for the EU Bank. With 400 000 trips a day, the Bangalore metro, as the second longest urban metro system in the country, tremendously helps decongest the city thus reducing road traffic and its impact on environment and climate. Two metro doors are exclusively reserved for female passengers, making women and girls feel more comfortable and safe.
