Special meeting of the European Council on migratory pressures in the Mediterranean, with the participation of Jean-Claude Juncker

Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the EC, and the Heads of State or Government of the EU met in Brussels for an Extraordinary European Council on migratory pressures in the Mediterranean, hosted by Donald Tusk, President of the European Council. Firstly the participants observed one minute of silence as a tribute to the almost two thousand victims of the numerous Mediterranean shipwrecks which took place on April 13, 16, 19 and 20.
EU leaders discussed the dramatic situation in the Mediterranean and agreed four priority areas for action: fighting traffickers, strengthening the EU presence at sea, preventing illegal migration flows, as well as reinforcing internal solidarity and responsibility.
The Heads of State or Government of the EU would revert to the issue of migration in Mediterranean during the European Council of 25-26/06/2015.
