NATO Summit with the participation of José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated in the NATO Summit in Newport, in the United Kingdom, with Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council, Barack Obama, President of the United States, and Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO. This edition of the Summit took place in a substantially different security environment caused mainly by the instability in Eastern Europe but also in the Middle East and North Africa. José Manuel Barroso attended a working session on Afghanistan. In his speech the President reiterated the EU long-term commitment to the country, exemplified in new strategy and funding until 2020 – including for the policing commitments made at the previous Chicago NATO Summit in 2012. Leaders also discussed the implications of Russia’s actions in Eastern Europe.
