Extracts from the press conference by Algirdas Šemeta, on the adoption of the Savings Tax Directive
On 24 March 2014, Algirdas Šemeta, Member of the EC in charge of Taxation, Customs, Statistics, Audit and Anti-Fraud, gave a press conference on the adoption of the Savings Tax Directive following the agreement of the European Council.
The Savings Tax Directive is a key tool for the EU in the fight against tax evasion, and the new text adopted the same day makes it stronger and wider in scope. It also ensures that the EU can maintain its place as global leader in tax transparency. This Directive will ensure the smooth implementation of the new global standard on automatic exchange of information being developed by the OECD. Moreover, agreement on a new Savings Directive in the EU will also help advance negotiations with Switzerland and other close neighbours for greater tax transparency. PHOTOSHOTLIST
