EU/Russia Summit with the participation of José Manuel Barroso
José Manuel Barroso, President of the EC, participated in the 32nd EU/Russia Summit with Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, and Herman van Rompuy, President of the European Council. This Summit was an important opportunity to reflect on the nature and direction of the Strategic Partnership between Russia and the EU. During the joint press conference José Manuel Barroso stressed that another way to reinforce the trust was to work jointly in one of their most important strategic and shared objectives: to create a common economic space from Lisbon to Vladivostok. It might seem a dream, but dreams could become reality. To achieve this, it was necessary to build on the principles of respect for sovereign decisions, democratic societies and open markets. The President also pointed out that the European Union's Eastern Partnership was key to achieve this strategic objective. This was about extending and anchoring stability, rule-of-law, investment opportunities and growth beyond the EU borders. José Manuel Barroso added that the Partnership was not against someone, it was for something – it was about making the countries in the EU neighbourhood more prosperous and giving their citizens better living conditions.
