On 22 January 2014, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, travelled to Montreux, Switzerland and participated to the Geneva II Middle East Peace Conference on Syria. On this occasion, she met with Fumio Kishida, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs.
