On 22 January 2014, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, travelled to Montreux, Switzerland and participated to the Geneva II Middle East Peace Conference on Syria together with Ban-Ki moon, Secretary General of the United Nations.
