Visit of Andris Piebalgs to the Philippines: emergency meeting of EU Ambassadors with ECHO
Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, visited the Philippines on 10-12 November 2013. The aim of the visit was to further advance bilateral development co-operation between the EU and the Philippines.
The visit was scheduled prior to Typhoon Haiyan hit the country, and was inevitably changed by the circumstances. On 11 November, Andris Piebalgs convened an emergency meeting of EU Ambassadors in Manila to receive a briefing from the EU Humanitarian Office (ECHO) teams to explain the extent of the devastation they witnessed on the ground in the Visayas and suggest the most effective forms of emergency assistance. That followed EU release of a first tranche of humanitarian assistance of 3 million euros. PHOTOSHOTLIST
