Visit of Andris Piebalgs to Bolivia: 19/08/2013

Andris Piebalgs, Member of the EC in charge of Development, visited Bolivia from 19 to 22 August 2013. On 19 August, he was welcomed by Felipe Cáceres, Bolivian Deputy Minister for Social Defence and Controlled Substances, in the Chapare Province, a coca leaf production area. He attended a briefing about EU programmes in counternarcotics, overflew coca producing areas in helicopter and visited a hearts of palm processing plant. During a press conference, Andris Piebalgs announced new European financial assistance to help the Bolivian Government to fight drug production and traffic. The new EU project is expected to benefit some 80,000 farmers’ families in Bolivia. It will help to create new economic opportunities in coca producing areas and to boost alternative forms of agriculture. The new programme will build on the EU’s previous work in fighting drugs, which has already contributed substantially to the reduction of coca cultivation surface.
