Visit of Catherine Ashton to Egypt: extracts from the press conference

On 30 July 2013, Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the EC, travelled to Cairo, Egypt and gave a press conference following her two-hour meeting with Morsi on 29 July 2013. It was the first contact the ousted Islamist leader had with the outside world since the military coup that overthrew him on 3 July 2013. On this occasion, Catherine Ashton announced that deposed Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi is doing well and that the two had an open and frank discussion about the country's political crisis and the need to move forward.
